Principal's Message

Happy summer!

          June 7, 2019

          Dear Parents and Families,

Wow!  It’s hard to comprehend that we’ve arrived at the last day of school!  I would like to thank our wonderful teachers and staff for their commitment to student achievement, our students for being enthusiastic learners, and you—our Palomino parents—for your continued support of your children and our amazing neighborhood school.

With the end of the school year and thoughts of magnet transition in mind, please join me in a fond farewell to Chatsworth Park Elementary School and our amazing staff.  Chatsworth Park Elementary has been an integral part of the Chatsworth community since 1880 and its legacy is truly unforgettable.  As of July 1, 2019, I’d like to welcome the staff and students of our new magnet school, Chatsworth Park Urban Planning Magnet!  While Chatsworth Park UPM is a new school, we will proudly carry on the Chatsworth Park Elementary tradition of providing our students with an academically challenging program that helps every child reach his/her potential.

The summer is a wonderful opportunity to rejuvenate ourselves.  I encourage you to continue reading every day with your children and establish a daily family reading time where the television is turned off and every family member is reading a book, magazine, or newspaper.  J  Summer is also a great time to establish daily journal writing as well as practice math facts.  Interested in finding summer activities to do with your children?  Join the Northridge/Chatsworth Patch bulletin board at patch.com/california/northridge and national.macaronikid.com.  Also, the Chatsworth Library will be hosting a summer reading program and both Matador and Brunswick Bowl have a free summer bowling program at www.kidsbowlfree.com

Students can also practice typing over the summer.  Our school purchased a typing program called Type to Learn that can also be accessed at home.  To download the program, go to ttl4.sunburst.com/downloads.  The account code is 154516.  The student’s user name (in most student cases) is the first initial of their first name along with their last name (ex. James Smith would be jsmith).  The password is ttl4.  Other fun, educational, and safe websites for your child to visit include www.tenmarks.com, www.code.org, www.zearn.org, www.funbrain.com, www.pbskids.org, kids.nationalgeographic.com, www.starfall.com, www.seussville.com, www.storylineonline.net, www.abcya.com, www.explorelearning.com, www.e-learningforkids.org, www.ixl.com, wonderopolis.org, and www.highlightskids.com.  Also, don’t forget that students will still have access to their www.readingeggs.com accounts throughout the summer!

On Monday, August 19, we’d love for you and your child to join us for an ice cream social from 3:30-4:00 p.m. (courtesy of our wonderful PTA).  During that time, we’ll also have class rosters available so your child will learn who his/her teacher will be.  School officially starts on Tuesday, August 20, 2019.

The Chatsworth Park school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:23 p.m. every day but Tuesdays.  Tuesday hours are 8:00 a.m.-1:23 p.m. due to professional development.  All gates will be open at 7:30 a.m.  Please do not send students to school earlier than 7:30 a.m.  The first week of school will be an “open campus” where adults will be able to walk onto campus through all three entrances (Devonshire, Hiawatha, and front office).  At the beginning of the second week, Chatsworth Park will officially become a “closed campus” where only adults who are scheduled to volunteer or have an appointment with a teacher will sign in at the main office.  Please note that for dismissal time, our gates will open promptly at the dismissal bell, not 5 minutes earlier.  Youth Services will continue to provide after school care for grades 2-5 until 6:00 p.m. (free of charge).

Since our school is transitioning to a magnet school, we are implementing a MANDATORY uniform policy Monday-Friday.  (Specific spirit days, designated by our K-Kids council, will be free dress days.)  If a child arrives to school not in uniform, the child’s parent will be contacted and asked to immediately bring a uniform to school.  Our uniform colors are as follows:

Polo Shirts:             Solid Navy blue, burgundy, white

Bottoms/Dresses:   Solid Navy blue (cloth or jeans), khaki, tan

*Chatsworth Park Palomino spirit wear is considered part of our uniform.

Please note that pants, shorts, and skirts must be a solid color (no patterns or designs).  Also, uniform clothing items can be purchased at any store of your choice.

Many parents enjoy taking advantage of school supply sales during the summer months.  Attached you’ll find a list of basic school supplies that you can donate to your child’s new teacher.  By helping our school/classrooms with the following donations and basic school materials, you help Chatsworth Park save funding that can then be directed toward the purchase of assemblies and field trips.   Please refrain from buying items from discount stores (Dollar Tree or 99¢ Stores) as the materials are not as durable.

On behalf of the entire Chatsworth Park staff, thank you for this incredible school year!  We are so proud of our Palomino students!  We thank you for being part of the Palomino team and sharing your children with us!  Our school is the BEST!  We’d love for you to share your thoughts on your 2018-19 experience here at Chatsworth Park on www.greatschools.org so other parents can see what a gem our school is!  Have a wonderful summer!  We look forward to the 2019-20 school year and the opening of Chatsworth Park Urban Planning Magnet School!

                        Sincerely,

                        Rachelle Ratner, Principal
